Group A

To be eligible for this occupation, you need a qualification that is comparable to an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field related to the nominated occupation.

People who apply should also have at least one year of post-qualification employment having highly relevant skills that were completed in the last five years.

If the qualifications do not meet the required educational level or are not in a highly relevant field of study, or if the employment occurred before obtaining the qualification, the applicant will be assessed at a skill level below the required standard.

This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

Statistics involves the collection, description, processing, and analysis of numerical data. Qualifications in certain fields may be considered on an individual basis if they include enough subjects in statistics, statistical techniques, linear models, multivariate analysis, experimental design, quantitative research methods, probability estimation, spatial modeling, survey design, time series analysis, distribution theory, and applied statistics.

The fields of study that may be considered include Business Analytics, Actuarial Studies, Data Science, Computer Science, Economics, Bioinformatics, and Epidemiology.

Employment

In Australia, there are presently no mandatory licensing or registration requirements for the profession of Statistician.

Tasks of a Statistician may include:

  • Collaborating with management and clients to identify the topic or area for survey or examination.
  • Defining the data to be gathered and the methods for collection and analysis.
  • Assessing and articulating the reliability and usefulness of source information.
  • Examining and interpreting data, and generating pertinent statistics and visual representations to illustrate and deduce specific trends and patterns.
