Stage 1 Competency assessment is the first step for International engineers who wish to migrate to Australia and practice as engineers in their field. The assessment is based on the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR), which is a document that demonstrates the engineer’s professional and technical abilities, as well as their knowledge and experience in their chosen field. The CDR must be written according to the guidelines and format provided by Engineer Australia. The CDR is reviewed by the assessors who check if the engineer has the required competencies to meet the Australian engineering standards. If the CDR is accepted, the engineer will be granted Stage 1 Competency and will be eligible to proceed to the next stage of the assessment process. This stage 1 competency is a mandatory requirement for the migration process and it’s essential for the engineers to clear this stage to practice as an engineer in Australia.
To become a certified engineer within the engineering profession, one must pass the Stage 1 Competency assessment in addition to other educational qualifications. This assessment is a determining factor for Membership eligibility.
The Stage 1 Competency assessment requires a comprehensive understanding of the engineering knowledge specific to the chosen category (Professional Engineer, Engineering Associate, Engineering or Technologist) and the ability to apply that knowledge to real-world situations and challenges within the chosen occupational field. Additionally, it requires the ability to continue learning and expanding knowledge across multiple engineering domains through both formal and informal means, as well as possessing the necessary skills and attributes of an expert. These are the key features of the Stage 1 Competency assessment process.

Common Mistakes in Crafting Summary Statements
When summarizing your CDR, it’s important to remember that missing important points or presenting a poorly written statement can negatively affect the evaluation of your CDR by the EA reviewer. It is important to avoid errors such as grammar, spelling, and plagiarism, as these can reflect a lack of attention to detail and competence in your work and give a negative impression of your CDR.
