Veterinary Nurse is a VETASSESS Group D occupation
This job needs a qualification that is equal to an Australian Certificate III or IV. Applicants can meet the criteria in one of four ways.
If someone worked before finishing the required qualification, they need at least one year of relevant work experience at the right skill level in the last five years. The other three years of work experience can be from the last ten years. Both the qualification level and work duration must be positively assessed for a successful Skills Assessment.
Group D
Additional qualifications in a highly relevant field of study include those comparable to the following levels:
- AQF Diploma
- AQF Advanced Diploma
- AQF Associate Degree or AQF Graduate Diploma
(Highly relevant paid employment duration (20 hours or more per week)
(1-3) Applicants must have a minimum of one year of highly relevant work experience at the appropriate skill level within the five years before applying for a Skills Assessment..
Applicants must have a minimum of four years of relevant work experience. This includes:
- At least one year of highly relevant work experience within the last five years before applying.
- An additional three years of relevant work experience, which can be from any time in the last ten years.

This includes qualifications assessed at AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level.

- Animal Science and Behaviour
Employment
- Highly relevant tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Holding animals for examination and treatment by veterinarians.
- Cleaning and sterilizing examination tables and equipment.
- Preparing instruments and handing them to the veterinarian.
- Assisting veterinarians in administering anesthetics and oxygen during operations.
- Placing animals in cages for recovery from operations and monitoring their condition.
- Giving medications to animals.
- Maintaining stock control and records.
- Providing animal care advice, and preparing, delivering, and reviewing animal care education programs.
Additional tasks may include:

- Performing diagnostic lab tests.
- Working as a receptionist, accepting payments, and doing clerical work.
