    Employment information

    What is Research and Development?

Research and Development (R&D), also known as R&D, involves the people, financial resources, and efforts dedicated to studying and developing technological innovations. The goal is to enhance existing products, create new ones, and streamline production processes. R&D activities are managed and supervised by R&D Managers within a company or organization.

What is the role of an R&D Manager?

R&D Managers typically oversee the entire process of developing new products and programs within an organization, starting from the initial planning stage through to implementation or production. They are responsible for monitoring all costs associated with these developments and determining which areas are worthwhile to pursue. R&D Managers oversee innovation projects from start to finish, ensuring they are adequately resourced and completed on time. While they may not directly participate in research and development activities, they need strong administrative and interpersonal skills to effectively carry out their role.

Where do R&D Managers typically work?

R&D Managers can work in various industries including healthcare, technology, business, and pharmaceuticals. The products developed in these industries can vary significantly; for instance, pharmaceutical companies focus on medicines and treatments, while technical companies may concentrate on software or hardware innovations. Therefore, R&D Managers often specialize in specific fields based on their interests and expertise.

Is a clinical research role considered suitable against the requirements of an R & D Manager?

To qualify for the role of R&D Manager, employment in clinical research settings like Senior Clinical Research Associate, Clinical Research Manager, or Director is acceptable only if there is evident management responsibility over personnel, procedures, and financial resources. Applicants applying as R&D Managers must provide an organizational chart as part of the supporting documentation for assessment.

NOTE: Clinical Trial Data Managers are categorized under a different ANZSCO code, specifically under Health Information Manager (ANZSCO 224213). Therefore, they are not eligible for assessment under the occupation of R&D Manager.

    Supporting Material for Assessment

If you are applying for this managerial role, you must include an organizational chart. This chart should:

    • Be on the company letterhead.
    • Clearly indicate your job position.
    • Show the job positions of your superiors and subordinates.
    • List all positions reporting directly to your immediate supervisor and those reporting directly to your direct subordinates.

If obtaining an organizational chart from your employer is not possible, please submit a statutory declaration. This declaration should outline the necessary information and explain why it cannot be provided by your employer.
