RPL Pathway for ACS Skills Assessment in Australia

RPL Pathway is an assessment pathway for people who have a wealth of experience in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry and wish to demonstrate their knowledge and skills for Australian migration. This pathway is the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway โ€“ administered by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), and evaluates relevant work experience and evidence, not tertiary qualifications.

The RPL Pathway may be an option for individuals in the IT profession who have experience in the field but do not have a suitable tertiary qualification for the standard ACS pathways. Applicants must continue to meet the relevant ACS eligibility criteria and provide evidence of their occupational experience relating to their nominated occupation.

We offer information about the RPL process and guidance on how to organise supporting evidence at CDR Writers, which will help you understand the process and be able to create your own project report to meet the RPL requirements.

What Is the RPL Pathway?

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Pathway is a pathway of the ACS Migration Skills Assessment for eligible IT, Data Science and Cyber Security professionals to seek assessment for Australian skilled migration.

The RPL Pathway is different from an assessment pathway where formal tertiary qualifications are assessed and will be based on the knowledge and competencies acquired through professional experience. The applicants are required to provide all the documents required by ACS to verify experience and technical skills.

This process involves preparing two RPL project reports, evidence of professional currency, and documentation of relevant paid employment. Applicants are required to also meet the work-experience and occupation-related requirements as applicable.

Labor Market Assessment (LMA) is not a visa. Labor Market Assessment (LMA) is not a visa; it is only a successful ACS skills assessment. It is part of the overall migration process, and applicants will need to meet the requirements of the visa pathway they seek on their own.

RPL Pathway

Who Should Consider the RPL Pathway?

The RPL Pathway may be considered for individuals with significant IT experience who have built up a considerable amount of knowledge and skills in the field, but who don’t have an appropriate tertiary qualification for the relevant ACS assessment pathway.

This pathway might be right for you if you:

  • Possess extensive work experience in the IT field.
  • Have acquired technical skills in real-world situations.
  • Have submitted and had an ACS Migration Skills Assessment approved with an ACS Migration Skills Assessment.
  • Can produce proof of work and income.
  • Can provide evidence of their occupational knowledge and experience as it relates to their job.
  • Can write original project reports from own professional project work.

The RPL Pathway is not a “cut and paste” mechanism that will ensure a positive assessment. Applicants should possess relevant information and be able to demonstrate the appropriate professional competencies as outlined in the ACS requirements.

RPL Pathway Eligibility Requirements

Please read the current eligibility criteria for ACS before completing the application.

Relevant IT Work Experience

ACS specifies a minimum of six years of relevant professional IT work experience for the RPL assessment pathway. Most recent work experience needs to be current or within 2 years of application.

The employment should be a professional job in accordance with the criteria for professional employment with ACS, which must include at least 20 hours of work per week. Prior to applying, candidates must check their work experience, job functions, and periods.

Formal Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications will not be assessed by the RPL Pathway. It is intended for evaluating candidates for eligibility based on their professional experience and supporting documentation.

If you have a degree, diploma or third level qualification, please check the ACS pathway options to see if you meet the criteria for an application type. Please remember that having a qualification doesn’t automatically preclude you or ensure you qualify for a pathway.

Relevant Nominated Occupation

Work experience and technical skills must be related to the occupation you nominate for assessment. If you are considering an occupation, check the occupation description and ACS requirements for the occupation you are interested in on the ANZSCO Website.

The suitability of an application will be determined by the evidence presented and the assessment criteria used by ACS.

Evidence of Paid Employment

Applicants need to provide evidence of their relevant work experience and show that they have been paid at the appropriate level for the professional position they are claiming.

People’s references may not be enough. Before submitting your application, check the latest ACS requirements for employment documents and payment evidence.

Professional Currency Evidence

Applicants need to show their knowledge is up to date and appropriate for the nominated occupation. ACS needs to receive a minimum of two types of professional currency evidence as part of the requirements for the RPL pathway.

The above criteria are to be verified in light of the official ACS guidance, as requirements and accepted evidence may change.

Documents Required for the RPL Pathway

The careful preparation of the necessary evidence will help to minimize lost application time. Exact documents will vary by situation and current ACS specifications.

Proof of Identity

Print the documents identified by ACS. These typically consist of two types of photo ID and supporting documentation of a name change (if applicable).

Make sure that your personal information is the same on all documents you submit.

Two RPL Project Reports

Applicants are required to prepare two project reports on the ACS Recognition of Prior Learning form.

Based on ACS, one report is to be of a project completed in the last two years and the other in the last four.

Each report is to describe your professional responsibilities, technical problems that arose, knowledge you used and what your role was in the process.

Applicants who have experience in non-project roles will need to follow the guidance provided by ACS in documenting the work experience and challenges that they had during their employment.

Note: The applicant’s work is important and should be in project report format for ACS. Reports should never be contracted to a third-party writing or editing company. While CDRWriters.org can offer some general guidance on published requirements and the organization of the reports, the applicant must create and present their reports and assumes responsibility for content.

Professional Currency Evidence

At least two forms of evidence are required to show current knowledge and skills for your nominated occupation.

  • Evidence can be in the form of:
  • Relevant professional training/certifications.
  • Professional artefacts, such as attributable code, applications, databases, publications or other work products.
  • Professional development and industry engagement including workshops, seminars or industry activities.

Evidence should relate to the nominated Occupation, and in most cases will be of a general nature within the period of recent time nominated by ACS. Please refer to the official guidance regarding evidence accepted and conditions.

Employment References

All documentation for employment must accurately reflect both the employer and the job as well as the dates of employment, working hours, and the duties relevant to the job, in accordance with ACS requirements.

Be sure that your reference is talking about what you actually did. The responsibilities should be in line with the supporting documents and the occupation you wish to have evaluated.

Payment Evidence

For ACS, there must be evidence to confirm paid work and to demonstrate that the income is at or commensurate with the professional level of the claim.

Check the official payment-evidence guidance to find out which documents are considered to be acceptable for your employment situation.

Additional Supporting Evidence

Extra evidence may be relevant or necessary as per the nominated occupation and current requirements. ACS also lays out the conditions for submitting certain completed vendor certificates.

Not all certificates/documents will be accepted. Please view the official document checklist for the most up-to-date information prior to applying.

How to Apply Through the RPL Pathway

You can create a more comprehensive application by following a procedure.

Step 1: Review the ACS Requirements

Read the official information on the assessment pathway for RPL. Ensure that your work experience and circumstances are in line with the published eligibility requirements.

Step 2: Identify Your Nominated Occupation

Read the relevant ANZSCO occupation description and ACS assessment criteria. The experience and supporting evidence should match the occupation you are nominating.

Step 3: Organise Your Employment History

Make a clear work history showing employers, jobs, dates, job responsibilities, and supporting evidence of payment.

Make sure the information is uniform in your documents.

Step 4: Select Relevant Professional Projects

Find appropriate projects from your career that can be used for the two RPL project reports in the ACS. Think about the technical issues, your own duties, your approach, and your results, which you can support.

Step 5: Write Your Own RPL Project Reports

Apply the ACS Recognition of Prior Learning form and appropriate guidance. Use your own words and provide accurate descriptions of your professional experience and technical knowledge of the information to be included in the reports.

Do not work from published examples or display someone else’s work. Properly address confidential information of employer or client.

Step 6: Collect Professional Currency Evidence

List 2 examples of appropriate evidence of knowledge and skills gained. Ensure that each of the items is relevant to the nominated occupation and the relevant ACS criteria.

Step 7: Check Your Supporting Documents

Look at identification papers, work references, paychecks, and other necessary documents. Ensure that dates, job titles, and individual information are consistent.

Step 8: Submit Your Application to ACS

Complete the official ACS online application, choose the appropriate evaluation course, pay the assessment fee, and submit the necessary documents.

After applying, keep track of your application on the respective ACS portal and reply accordingly, following the instructions given in the portal.

Common RPL Pathway Application Mistakes

Applicants are advised to be careful not to have the following problems:

  • Insufficient employment evidence: Missing or inconsistent employment and payment records can create verification difficulties.
  • Unclear project responsibilities: Reports that do not distinguish personal contributions from the work of a wider team may fail to demonstrate the applicant’s own technical knowledge clearly.
  • Outdated or unsuitable evidence: Supporting material should satisfy the relevant timeframe and occupation requirements.
  • Inconsistent employment dates: Differences between references, payment records and other documents may require clarification.
  • Incorrect pathway selection: Applicants should compare the ACS pathways before choosing an assessment type.
  • Unsupported technical claims: Descriptions of projects and responsibilities should be accurate and supported by the applicant’s own experience.
  • Outsourced project reports: ACS requires applicants to produce their own RPL project reports. Outsourcing these reports to a writing agency is not permitted.
  • Assuming an assessment guarantees a visa: A positive skills assessment does not replace the remaining visa eligibility requirements.

By looking at the official criteria in advance, the applicants can be aware of the documents they may be missing and avoid any unwarranted errors.

How CDR Writers Can Help With RPL Pathway Preparation

The process of understanding the RPL process and arranging supporting evidence can be difficult, particularly for those workers who may have many or complex work histories.

CDR Writers offers information to support applicants in understanding the documentation process and moving forward.

We can help with all of the following:

  • Describing the published ACS RPL requirements and the stages of the ACS RPL.
  • Assisting with the document checklist.
  • Explaining (in general terms) how to organise employment records.
  • Discussing what professional currency evidence is and its purpose.
  • Explaining published requirements for project reports and supporting documentation.
  • Redirecting applicants to approved ACS resources for pathway-specific questions.

Applicants are required to be responsible for their application and the correctness of any information provided to ACS. The applicant must prepare the project report himself/herself, and all project reports must be prepared without outsourcing to third parties. No positive assessment outcome, employment or visa approval or migration eligibility is guaranteed.

To make reliable assessment decisions, clarify eligibility and to know what is currently required in applications, applicants should refer to ACS.
