Student Counsellor is a VETASSESS Group A occupation

Group A

For this occupation, applicants need a qualification equivalent to an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher, in a field closely related to the nominated occupation. 

Additionally, they must have at least one year of highly relevant, post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level completed within the last five years.

Both the qualification and employment must receive a positive assessment for a favorable Skills Assessment Outcome.

Group A

Those with a Bachelor that is not ‘highly relevant’ but in a related field, and with an Australian Graduate Diploma in Counselling or Psychotherapy can be accepted.

  • Offer information, comprehension, and guidance regarding students’ learning and behaviour, particularly those with special needs, while aiding parents and teachers in addressing these requirements.
  • Introduce alternative methods and engage in discussions about the potential for altering attitudes and behaviours.

Additional tasks may include:

  • Keeping precise and confidential records of clients.
  • Recommending clients to other professionals and service providers when necessary.

In Australia, there aren’t any laws that demand licensing or registration for the job of Student Counselor. However, some employers might require membership in a professional organisation like the Psychotherapy and Counseling Federation of Australia.
