Employment information
Dancers are performers who entertain audiences by dancing either solo, with a partner, or as part of a group. They specialize in various dance styles such as ballet, contemporary, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, folk, jazz, ballroom, and tap.
In Australia, dancers can work for national and state ballet companies, contemporary dance troupes, independent choreographers, musical productions, TV studios, and some opera companies. Getting a position usually involves auditions and interviews with the company’s director or project leader.
Dancers may have permanent roles with established dance companies or work independently in smaller groups as freelance artists.
Many dancers have diverse careers, often combining performance, choreography, and teaching. If you’re applying as a Dancer or Choreographer, you must show that your main role is focused on dancing and/or choreographing. Those primarily teaching dance might find better fit under Dance Teacher (Private Tuition) (ANZSCO 249212).
